symptoms of colds and flu. Leading nutritionists formulated this
balanced daily child supplement using naturally grown herbs.
Why take a Lime Cold and Flu Vita-mini?
Children's immune systems are not fully developed. They have less
protection than adults against bacteria and viruses, which is why they
acquire more infections than adults. A healthy diet with plenty of
fruits and vegetables helps to support the immune system.
The National Dietary Survey of Schoolchildren, 1985, showed more than
20% of the energy intake of children came from soft drinks,
confectionary, high sugar foods, take-aways and snack products.
Foods containing large amounts of sugar decrease the immune system's
resistance to infections. This may explain why children often develop a
cold or flu after attending parties and consuming large quantities of
sugar.
Three ingredients can assist the child in relieving symptoms of cold and flu- Echinacea, Vitamin C, and Zinc.
Echinacea
Echinacea angustifolia is a well-known natural antibiotic that is
effective in assisting in the relief from symptoms of colds and flu.
The bactericide and fungicide actions of Echinacea allow for a more
rapid killing of infective organisms.
Echinacea contains Anti-oxidants and can also mobilise body reserves of
Anti-oxidant vitamins A, E and Beta-carotene. Anti-oxidant nutrients
may help in the prevention and treatment of the symptoms of colds and
flu. In 1992, a German study was performed involving over 100 patients
who were previously shown to be susceptible to colds and flu.
Short term and continuous treatment with Echinacea was shown to
decrease the number of infections, with more people remaining
infection-free, and having longer periods of time between infections.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an Anti-oxidant necessary for growth and development,
found in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially citrus, tomatoes and
berries. Since the Vitamin C content of food decreases with food
processing and storage, it is not surprising to find that refined foods
contain very low amounts of this essential nutrient.
The Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for Vitamin C in children is 40-60mg
daily. Research is showing that the supplementation of Vitamin C, in
doses above the RDI, helps to prevent disease. Vitamin C requirements
are increased during periods of infection. Regular administration of
oral Vitamin C is shown to decrease the severity and frequency of the
symptoms of colds and flu.
Zinc
Children require 10-15 mg of the essential trace mineral, Zinc, daily.
Up to 50% of Australian children are Zinc deficient, with boys more
susceptible than girls. Zinc effects include assisting the immune
system, wound and skin healing and providing relief from the symptoms
of cold sores and mouth ulcers.
Supplementation with Zinc has a positive effect on growth, increases
child activity levels, improves resistance to infections and assists
cognitive development in general.
